Alabama men’s golf team has added Luke Powell, a standout transfer from UCLA, to its roster. Head coach Jay Seawell confirmed that Powell will continue his collegiate career with the Crimson Tide after two seasons at UCLA.
Powell was recognized as an all-conference performer during his time with the Bruins. As a freshman in the 2023-24 season, he earned spots on both the PAC-12 All-Freshman Team and the All-PAC-12 Second Team. He was also named a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Region performer.
During his tenure at UCLA, Powell played in 22 tournaments and posted an average score of 72.44 strokes per round. He recorded four top 10 finishes and six top 20 results over those events.
Coach Jay Seawell expressed enthusiasm about Powell’s arrival: “We are thrilled to add what we think is another valuable piece to our team with the addition of Luke. He wants to win championships, and his ideals match up with those of our program, so we feel it is a perfect fit. We had a chance to watch Luke first-hand when he outdueled Nick Dunlap to win the Hamptons Intercollegiate, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him join our program.”
In his freshman year at UCLA, Powell competed in all 12 tournaments for the Bruins, averaging 71.7 strokes over 37 rounds. He achieved four top 10s and five top 20s that season and registered 17 rounds under par, including 12 rounds in the 60s.
A highlight from his freshman campaign came when Powell won his first collegiate medal at the Hamptons Intercollegiate by defeating Nick Dunlap. His performance there included a score of 17-under par 199 (64-67-68), which marked the third-lowest three-round tournament total in UCLA’s history.
Powell continued as a consistent presence for UCLA into his sophomore year, participating in ten tournaments with an average score of 73.5 per round.
Powell hails from Laguna Niguel, California, and attended Capistrano Valley Christian Schools before joining UCLA.
