Alabama baseball pitcher Tyler Fay was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Pitcher of the Week, according to a March 25 announcement. Fay earned this recognition for his performance on March 20, when he threw a nine-inning no-hitter against then-No. 18 Florida.
This latest honor marks the fifth national award for Fay following his outing against the Gators. He has also been named Golden Spikes x D1Baseball Pitcher of the Week, Perfect Game USA’s Pitcher of the Week, College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Week, and secured a spot on Baseball America’s Week Six National Team of the Week.
Fay’s achievement is notable as it is only the ninth no-hitter in Alabama program history and represents Alabama’s first individual nine-inning no-hitter since Eddie Owcar accomplished it in 1942. His effort helped lead Alabama to a 6-0 victory in game one and set up their first sweep over Florida since 2002.
During his record-breaking game, Fay pitched all nine innings, struck out thirteen batters—a new career high—and allowed just two walks while retiring twenty-seven out of twenty-nine hitters faced. He recorded at least one strikeout in seven different innings and had multiple strikeouts in five innings during that start.
Through six starts this season, Fay holds a 4.06 earned run average with seventeen earned runs allowed over thirty-seven and two-thirds innings pitched. He leads Alabama pitchers in both total innings thrown (37.2), strikeouts (47), and opponent batting average (.187).
The series-opening win by Fay not only secured an individual milestone but also contributed to an important team accomplishment for Alabama baseball.
