Alabama softball took its first loss of the 2026 season on March 14, as Arkansas defeated the Crimson Tide 14-9 at Rhoads Stadium to even the weekend series.
The game was significant as it ended Alabama’s undefeated run, bringing their record to 25-1 overall and 4-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Arkansas improved to 23-3 overall and 3-2 in conference games. The outcome sets up a decisive matchup for the series finale.
Arkansas capitalized on two Alabama errors in the first inning to take an early lead. Although Alabama tied the game in the second inning with RBI singles from Mari Hubbard and Jena Young, Arkansas responded with a two-run double by Dakota Kennedy and continued to build their advantage. The Crimson Tide rallied in the fourth inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs, highlighted by Alexis Pupillo’s go-ahead RBI single. However, Arkansas quickly tied it again with a leadoff home run in the fifth and pulled ahead with another homer in the sixth before sealing their win with a six-run seventh inning.
Head Coach Patrick Murphy said after the game: “It was an ugly and uncharacteristic start. Too many runs were given up, but they went up two and we came back and tie it. They went up four and we come back to take the lead. We battled through it but couldn’t take the win. I always say that championship Sunday is about who can adjust the quickest and take the series. That’s what tomorrow will be about.
“On a positive note, today we got to celebrate another special senior. Marlie [Giles] is highly competitive and highly motivated. She’s a great student with a great family and has represented her hometown of Clanton very well. She is an awesome kid and we’re very glad that she wears crimson.”
Alexis Pupillo extended her reached-base streak to 22 games with an RBI single and a walk, while Brooke Wells recorded her ninth multi-hit game of the season along with her team-leading eleventh multi-RBI performance. Ana Roman drew three walks, marking a season best for any Alabama player since last year.
The teams are set to meet again on Sunday afternoon for the final game of their weekend series.
