Alabama track and field wins three medals on day two of SEC Championships

On the second day of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Outdoor Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, Alabama’s Doris Lemngole won the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:20.83. This victory marks her as the first athlete since 2015-16 to win back-to-back titles in this event at the SEC level.

Katelyn Adel and Mariia Horielova also reached the podium for Alabama. Adel finished second in the women’s heptathlon with a personal-best score of 5,619 points, becoming Alabama’s fourth silver medalist in that event at the SEC Championships. Horielova secured second place in the women’s long jump on her first attempt with a mark of 6.37 meters (20-10.75).

Additional contributions came from nine other Alabama athletes across five events, including Miracle Ailes (women’s high jump), Carson Burian (men’s 3,000m steeplechase), Christopher Crawford and Trevor Gunzell (men’s shot put), Treneese Hamilton and Mye’Joi Williams (women’s shot put), John Landers (men’s decathlon), Ezekiel Pitireng (men’s 3,000m steeplechase), and Lilly Walters (women’s 3,000m steeplechase).

At the end of day two, Alabama’s men were third overall with 42 points while the women held second place with 38 points.

Athletes advancing to Saturday’s finals include Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400 meters after winning his heat with a time of 45.34 seconds and Keaton Morrison in the women’s 1,500 meters after qualifying with a time of 4:20.29.

Other notable finishes included John Landers placing sixth overall in the decathlon and earning three points for Alabama men; Mye’Joi Williams finishing fourth in women’s shot put; Trevor Gunzell fifth and Christopher Crawford sixth in men’s shot put; Treneese Hamilton eighth in women’s shot put; Mariia Horielova earning eight points for her long jump performance; Miracle Ailes placing seventh in women’s high jump; Ezekiel Pitireng finishing fourth and Carson Burian eighth in men’s steeplechase; and Lilly Walters taking eighth place among women.

The championships continue Saturday as more athletes compete for final placements.
