Alabama pitcher Riley Quick has been selected in the first round of the 2025 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Chosen 36th overall by the Minnesota Twins, Quick becomes the sixth first-round draft pick in Alabama’s history.

Quick is now recognized as the second-consecutive first-round pitcher from Alabama, following Ben Hess, who was picked 26th overall by the New York Yankees in 2024. This selection makes Quick the third-highest pitcher drafted from Alabama, alongside Hess and Taylor Tankersley.

“Riley Quick (1st Round | 36th Overall | Minnesota Twins)” read a statement on his impressive career at Alabama. He earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Southeast Region Second Team honors and was named a Second Team All-SEC selection as a starting pitcher in 2025. Over three seasons, he appeared in 31 games with a record of 10-4 and an ERA of 3.72.

Quick underwent season-ending elbow surgery after his start against Manhattan on February 17, 2024. Despite this setback, he continued to perform well throughout his college career.

Alabama has had a long history of producing MLB talent, with Quick being the eighth player selected by the Twins from Alabama since Connor Prielipp and Garrett McMillan were chosen in earlier rounds in 2022. With this latest selection, Alabama’s all-time draft picks total has reached 177 players since its inception in 1966.

The MLB Draft began on July 13 and will continue through July 14. The event is available for fans to follow on MLB.com.

Players who have remaining eligibility may choose to return to Alabama if they decide not to sign professional contracts.
