Alabama track and field athlete Samuel Ogazi has been named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Men’s Runner of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office on Tuesday. Ogazi is the third University of Alabama student-athlete in as many weeks to receive a weekly conference honor.

Ogazi won the men’s 400-meter title at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic last weekend. This was his first race of the season in this event. He set a new facility record with a personal-best time of 44.85 seconds (44.96a). Ogazi, who is also the reigning outdoor national champion, now holds a time that ranks second on this year’s world list, thirteenth all-time in the event, and second in Alabama program history.

This recognition marks Ogazi’s first conference weekly honor of the season. His performance stands as the second-fastest 400-meter time recorded in the SEC so far this year.

Other recent SEC weekly award winners from Alabama include Katelyn Adel, who was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on January 27, and Doris Lemngole, who received Women’s Runner of the Week honors on February 3.
