City of Tuscaloosa issued the following announcement on Oct. 23.
In recognition of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the City of Tuscaloosa Lead Hazard Abatement Program will be hosting free lead poisoning prevention events at various locations the week of Oct. 25 – 31. Event attendees will learn more about lead poisoning prevention and free services offered by the City to aid in lead-based paint removal.
Lead poison prevention event information is as follows:
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1 – 2 p.m. McKenzie Courts
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 4 – 6 p.m. McAbee Center
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 12 – 1 p.m. Tuscaloosa River Market
Thursday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. McDonald Hughes Center
Saturday, Oct. 31, 10 – 11 a.m. Belk Center
Saturday, Oct. 31, 12 – 1 p.m. Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), 24 million homes in the United States have peeling or chipping lead-based paint or high levels of lead dust. The older a home, the greater the chances of having a lead-based paint hazard.
“Whether you are a homeowner, rental property owner or tenant, it is important that your home is lead-safe,” said Chip Cates, program manager for the Lead Hazard Abatement Program. “Participation in the Lead Hazard Abatement Program can make your home lead-safe, family friendly and improve the value of your property.”
Homeowners and rental property owners within the Tuscaloosa city limits may qualify for grants to fund improvements. Potential items that qualify include:
- New windows
- New doors
- Fresh paint
- Aluminum trim
- Vinyl siding
