In homes of older construction materials and contents, with proper warning (ie. Smoke Alarms) you have approximately 15-17 minutes to safely evacuate your home, but with newer modern construction and synthetic materials being used today, a fire will burn hotter and faster and now you only have approximately 6-7 minutes to escape. Simply closing your bedroom door can limit the spread of a fire and buy you the critical extra minutes to escape safely.
