Today, Taylorville Primary School held a special program, in remembrance of 9/11 and in recognition of TPS’s selection as a National Freedom Flag and World Trade Center Educational Project host school. Each year, The Freedom Flag Foundation selects only one school per state to host a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
Special guests at the assembly included representatives from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office and Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Service, as well as elected officials. Lieutenant Holloway, who represented the Sheriff’s Office, traveled to New York City in the weeks following September 11, 2001, to assist in recovery efforts. Students presented the first responders with cards and a Freedom Flag, which is a symbol of remembrance for 9/11.
A committee of TPS faculty members began working last year to help TPS earn the honor of being a host school for the Freedom Flag and WTC steel. Two of the committee members grew up in the New York City/New Jersey area, and were students there when the attacks of September 11, 2001 happened. For them, it is especially meaningful to help their students learn about the significance of 9/11.
The steel will remain on loan to Taylorville Primary for the entire school year, displayed in a location visible to students and visitors to the school. The purpose of the WTC Steel Educational Project is to teach the current K-12 generation about the events of 9/11, and to provide a unique historical artifact to complement learning.
